i've been realizing lately that there are certain quirky things you do as a young poor artist/student/person. they are ok and even kind of an expected, maybe romanticized part of being young. the thing that i did not get the memo on was that there is a certain point when you begin to leave these things gently behind as you move on to becoming an adult. if you don't, they start to mutate into these not-so-pleasant quirks which become part of the make-up of who you are as an irresponsible, aloof, spacey and just kind of weird, single/should've-had-it-figured-out-by-now older guy who used to be a reckless, lively, sharp, warm and kind independent young buck. let me give you an example:
this morning i woke up late and a bit hungover, realized that i had wanted to wake up early and move my truck for street sweeping. sweet, second 42 dollar parking ticket in two days. this then reminds me that i needed to check my bank account because i sold my bass and the shipping was double what i had figured/accounted for. i realize that my account is about to be overdrawn so i freak out and drop everything. i run into my room and empty out a jar of change and gold dollar coins that i've been saving to "buy something cool" onto my bed, this adds up to fourteen dollars, i need to come up with 130 or else there will be like six-five dollar transactions that will be overdrawn. i then begin to frantically look through all my clothes thinking i can sell some of them at buffalo exchange. i throw some clothes on, without having brushed my teeth or doing... anything besides getting out of bed and run out to my truck with pants falling down (no time for a belt) because of all of the change in the pockets and a big trash bag over my shoulder. i know a guy at B.E. and he seems to usually take most of anything i bring to him. "sweet" i says to myself "i am eliminating stuff that i don't really need and i am going to figure this out in time!"
on the way to b.e. i begin to paint, in my mind, a scene of me walking in and the girls behind the counter looking through all of my clothes and making "wow" looks with their eyes. they look over at me and i shoot them a sharp one that says "i don't need this shit, i am a simple and unmaterialistic man. i am actually going to use the money to start a farm and go be really manly and naked in the wilderness" because my clothes are so cool they end up giving me a small fortune for them and i walk out a rich man!
it almost happened like that.... except that they only took one pair of jeans and a flannel, i got $21.70 for them. i even snapped at the girl a bit, like the grumpy old man i am, saying, "you don't even want the EVER stuff? this flannel retails for like $200 and it's next season! you guys always take my EVER stuff" she was not impressed. instead of the "wow" look i got more of a "you are a retarded old dummie" kind of look. so i begrudgingly snatched my bag of clothes off the counter that i didn't really want to sell but don't really want anymore just because of the principal (stubbornness/pride). i go to the bank and dump a bag of quarters and gold dollars on the teller's counter and 21 dollars. i wearily explain to him that i know this is annoying to do but i am going to over draw my account. he then informs me that the 130 dollars already went through and i am fine. i actually will have enough to pay off the parking tickets and still be fine. thank you.

I call it the "art of hustling". I have to do it myself from time to time.
