loosing face has never felt so good!
hahaha that title is so stupid. i just deleted my facebook profile. that shit is evil man. i know that "it's a good way to get in touch with people that you normally would have no way of getting in touch with," but i going to say something really rude right now, the only thing that interests me about people that "i would normally have no way of getting in touch with" is a momentary novelty of "wow, so that's what they ended up doing huh?" ...five seconds go by.... and that's it... the climax of my facebook experience. why are we so obsessed with wanting other people to know what we are doing/thinking? i'm serious. why is that? that twitter is a facebook concentrate thus even more evil. nobody cares (besides our moms who get their own facebook profiles and sit around at work all day sending you tinkerbell themed "e-cards" so sweet!), they are there to get your attention on what they are doing/thinking. (i am sure you might be thinking "well you're on a blog thinking that everyone cares what you are doing/thinking right now hypocrite!" you're right. i am a hypocrite... are we done?) otherwise the facebook is a worthless piece of crap. more than that, it is a waste of the relationships i have with people that i DO want to stay in contact with. This is a certain aspect of the future that honestly scares me. i'm am going to go out on a limb and sound like a complete conspiracy theorist asshole right now but i can't lie about the fact that it makes "being social" so easy and self-centered. i can comfortably sit in my room and not be challenged or threatened. i don't have to be or do anything that i think others would find objectionable (crazy, that's actually a word. i thought spell check would have flagged that shit for sure). I know three people who I feel have every REALLY stood up for anything. i'm not one of them. i've never had to fight a war. my uncles did. the draft. they chose to volunteer because if you're drafted you go right into the army, "the shit" (i learned that from watching a movie called full metal jacket last night) if you volunteer you can choose whether you are in the coast guard or the navy or something, your chances of not dying are way better. i never had to make that choice. i was never forced to even think about it. there were always enough midwestern rednecks who had nothing else going for them to do it for me. i know that sounds horrible but i think that deep-down it is something that i really thought, shame on me. but i love to talk politics and complain about a shit-load of things that piss me off and make me feel smart. i've never REALLY been challenged as a person, or a man, or a saint. this life is so easy that it scares the shit out of me. i'm not trying to be a "we have it so good cause of the starving kids in africa and some other stuff...." type right now. i pity myself for having it so easy but i'm too much of a coward to actually put myself in a situation where i don't. cheers.

Is that Derek or the doobster in the picture there?
I enjoyed your post. I have wavered over(and deleted and rejoined) facebook and its merits and also conclude that it has few. I add to the mess by going on but contributing very little to the "social networking" realm. But I have friends who seemingly majored in web 2.0 (I still have no idea what that means) skills and swear by these things and so I'm stuck in the middle...Dear Lord, forgive my technological bespattered soul.
Miss you man, and wish as always we could have this conversation in person. Alas, technology gets the final laugh on that one.
Well said to the both of yous.
Got me thinking, I wonder what society, youngins in general, will look like after 20 or 50 years of not properly learning and exercising good social skills as a result of things like facebook. I don't think Wall-e was too far off when it showed two friends next to each other, having a conversation through a network. Kind of pisses me off even though I do it. It's not all bad.
I currently go to a city college, and you do too d. Dont' get me wrong, there are kids with plenty of potential. But on the other hand, look at all the dumb-asses that mope around with their faces in their phones "bumping" the crappiest "music" and writing "fcuk this" on the bathroom wall. The bathroom walls at PCC are are some sort of granite veneer. You know who else used to write on granite? Neanderthal man. Thats who. which leads me to wonder, which way are we moving? Forwards or backwards?
Can we conclude that Facebook is turning us into cavemen?
hahaha indeed. genius.
